Pitching in the American Association Playoffs, 1933-1962

Pitching in the American Association Playoffs, 1933-1962

Welcome Fall! And with fall comes the fall issue of the American Association Almanac.  This issue is another comprehensive treatment of the American Association playoffs which began in 1933. Past issues have dealt with team and player performances and records. Here pitchers are under the microscope including those from late-arriving teams, including Charleston, Denver and Omaha, in addition to three of the eight original teams, the Columbus Red Birds, Indianapolis Indians and Kansas City Blues. The remaining five teams of the original eight will be treated in next fall's issue.

This issue had its share of adversity behind it. Work on the writing portion began at the end of June and less than a week later we had to put our wonderful cat, Peanut, down at the age of 20. She had been with us since she was three months old when we adopted her from a humane society here in Minnesota along with her energetic alpha sister, Punkin, who died of natural causes five-plus years previous. Which of course meant Peanut was the sole occupant of the throne of the domicile, a position for which she was amply rewarded. Being an animal lover, losing Peanut hit me hard. I took a week away from writing and when I came back to the task my heart just wasn't in it. As a result, the work went through various stages before I settled on the format presented here. In time, I recovered my "moxie" and settled into a good work pattern;  I was grateful for that because I was still obsessing about the death of my beautiful girl. The distraction was welcome.

In light of the fact that the Almanac's Spring 2025 issue was riddled with typos and grammatical issues, I vowed to tighten things up. I don't know how many so-called grammar programs I went through. I was hoping Grammarly would be the answer but it didn't work the way I was hoping it would. In the end I wound up relying on good ol' number one, my own eyes and brain, to clean up the usual assortment of challenges that are inevitable in any document, particular one approaching 30,000 words (this issue weighs in at roughly 28,500).

One substantial editorial decision I had to make for the Fall issue was using a boldface font for each player name. Many sports writers will format a name in bold once and if the name comes up again it is not "bolded" again. I made the decision to bold it with each mention which made formatting a bit tricky. I had already gone over the manuscript several times and still I found un-bolded names! Whether or not this practice proves worthwhile remains to be seen, but there were a lot of names in this issue, and that fact provided a challenge in and of itself!

Then there was the computer crash. I started using "iCloud" and it wound up biting me in the ass because of how I depended on it for file storage. My Mac didn't like that and she let me know about it by crashing which meant re-doing a significant round of edits I'd made the last week of August. Always a learning experience... I'm convinced the re-write was better than before the crash, but it was a set-back I could have done without.

Two special discoveries were made while researching for this issue. First, it was found that a team had played a full nine-inning contest without an assist. This required quite a bit of extra checking with various online resources, and it was found to be true.

The second discovery belongs in the annals of Ripley's Believe It Or Not.  While writing the column "Gone With the Great Majority," it was found that two players from the 1960 St. Paul Saints died on the same day, not date, day. Not only did they play for the same team in the same season, they appeared in the very same outfield during two games of the American Association playoffs in 1960, in addition to a few other playoff games as well!

The two players were center fielder Carl Warwick and utility man Nate Oliver. Truly an amazing discovery for anyone who appreciates such bizarre rarities in the sporting world.

Read more about Warwick and Oliver, and many other players who donned the flannels during the American Association playoffs by ordering your copy today!

Or subscribe for one year at $26.00 or two years at $44.00. The American Association Almanac is a print volume, ad-free and a pretty darn literate baseball history journal.

If you have an interest in Class AAA minor league baseball, a topic that isn't quite in vogue in the repertoire of baseball history, you're sure to find thrills and chills galore reading this issue. Be the first on your block to own a copy!
