The All-Time Records of the American Association Playoffs, 1933-1962, Part 1
Volume 18, Number 2 • Fall 2022
The American Association Almanac presents the complete records of the American Association playoffs from 1933 to 1962 in Part 1 of Vol. 18, No. 2, Fall 2022.
Part 1 covers the records comparing playoff series and games.
The project began five years ago to document the playoffs in a comprehensive fashion. The first step provided the basis for this compilation. It involved locating each box score for the games in five-season increments. The details of those games were covered in the Almanac beginning with Vol. 13, No. 2.
As the project wrapped up with the Spring 2022 edition of the Almanac, what remained was a database which included the information from the box scores. That exhaustive database included numerous spreadsheets, but was yet to be fully organized in a way that would allow a full-scale statistical analysis to begin.
In the spring of 2022 that analysis was undertaken. It involved 475 games in 183 series over 29 seasons. This process required a careful delineation of over 280 categories which could be sorted for the purpose of comparison. The idea was to discover the leaders in their respective categories.
In early October 2022 the process of organizing the data sufficiently progressed to allow a narrative to begin for covering the series (as its own separate category) and games of the American Association playoffs from a variety of perspectives. The writing process describing the playoff records for series and teams wrapped up in mid-November and was published in this volume.
While statistical in its overall presentation, this issue of the Almanac provides the reader with a glimpse into playoff highlights in a way that has never before been attempted.
Part 2 of the American Association Almanac will include a broader analysis of these records, plus a presentation of the records as organized by team and player. It is scheduled to be published in the fall of 2023.
